Urgent Care

HPSM has five urgent care centers in our network. PCPs may wish to refer patients to an urgent care center when:

  • A patient needs to be seen sooner than you have an appointment opening
  • A patient needs care outside of your office hours (for example, evenings, weekends or holidays)
  • The situation isn’t an emergency (that is, not life-threatening)

Referring patients to urgent care

Some urgent care centers accept either appointments (which can be made by phone or online) or walk-ins. Others only accept walk-ins.

How urgent care helps patients & PCPs

  • HPSM wants you to remain the member’s primary care provider, and our Nurse Advice Line will only refer your patients to urgent care when it is the most appropriate option in a given situation
  • Wait times for urgent care are typically shorter than at the ER
  • Care coordination: Within one to two hours after an HPSM member’s visit, the clinic faxes a visit summary to the member’s PCP which includes lab results and follow-up suggestions
