Get Ready for Your Child’s First Dental Visit

What to expect

  • The dentist will examine your child’s mouth for growth and development That may include their teeth, gums, jaws and bite. The dentist may ask you about your child’s diet and what you do to take care of their teeth.
  • The dentist may use X-rays to look for problems However, X-rays are usually only done on children younger than seven when a problem is suspected.
  • A complete check-up may last 30 to 45 minutes That gives the dentist time to check your child’s oral health. The dentist may show you how to brush and floss your child’s teeth at home.
  • Schedule a visit at a time your child will be the most comfortable, such as after a nap or after a meal.
  • Brush your child’s teeth before their appointment.

Before the appointment

Plan to bring:

Tell your child about the appointment and what to expect to help feel more comfortable

  • Play games to familiarize your child with the experience. For example, have them sit in a chair. Pretend to be the dentist by counting and brushing their teeth. Then let your child pretend to be the dentist with a stuffed animal or doll.
  • Read books or watch videos about going to the dentist with their favorite characters.
  • Have your child bring their favorite stuffed animal or toy to their dental appointment for comfort.

During the appointment

  • Show both your child’s HPSM ID card and Medi-Cal BIC at the front desk.
  • Fill out any paperwork you are asked to complete.
  • When the dentist is ready to see your child, a staff member will bring both of you from the waiting room into the exam room.
