Who is High-Risk for Serious Illness From the Flu?

It is vital for people who are at high risk for serious illness from the flu to get a flu vaccine each year. Complications from the flu can be life-threatening. 

People at high risk include:

  • Adults who are 65 and older
  • People with chronic health issues such as:
    • Asthma
    • Diabetes
    • Heart disease/stroke
    • Kidney disease
  • People with a weakened immune system due to health conditions such as:
    • Cancer
    • HIV or AIDS
  • People with disabilities
  • Children younger than 5 years old – especially those younger than 2
  • Children with neurologic conditions, such as disorders of the brain and spinal cord
  • Pregnant people
  • People from racial and ethnic minority groups
