COVID-19 Vaccine Safety

Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective

Now that everyone who is 12 or older is eligible to get the vaccine, it is vital that you do. The vaccine will work with your immune system to help protect you from COVID-19. Getting vaccinated can also help protect your family and others around you.

All COVID-19 vaccines have been fully tested on thousands of people to make sure they are as safe as possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continue to study how people react to the vaccines.

You cannot get sick with COVID-19 from any of the vaccines. In fact, the vaccine may help keep you from getting seriously ill if you get sick with COVID-19. If you have any questions about the vaccine or side effects, call your primary care provider (PCP) or HPSM’s Nurse Advice Line

Vaccine safety information for children

In April 2021, the FDA, CDC and Western States Scientific Review Workgroup approved the Pfizer vaccine as safe and effective for children 12 and over.

  • Clinical trials with children and teens showed the vaccine to provide 100% immunity for this age group
    • None of the thousands of subjects in the vaccine trials got COVID-19
    • Results showed that the Pfizer vaccine is even more effective in children than in adults
  • The COVID-19 vaccine is not yet approved for children under 12 years old
    • Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are now testing their vaccines in younger children, including babies
