Regular dental visits are a key part of your child’s oral health and overall wellness. Along with daily brushing and flossing, dental care helps prevent tooth decay (cavities), the single most common childhood disease. Without preventive care and treatment, tooth decay can cause mouth pain, infection and other health problems for your child.
Covered dental services
There is no limit for covered, medically necessary dental services. The dental provider can help pick the best treatment and determine which services your child can get through HPSM Dental. Some of the services covered include:
- Dental exams and teeth cleanings every three, four and six months (depending on cavities risk level)
- Full mouth x-rays once every three years (additional x-ray benefits available; urgent x-rays allowed as needed)
- Fillings for baby teeth once a year and permanent teeth once every three years
- Tooth removal as often as needed
- Orthodontics (braces) when medically necessary or correction is needed
- Emergency services as often as needed

There is no cost for your child’s dental benefits. Get started today—it's quick and easy. Here’s how:
1. Pick a dentist for your child:
- Go to our online Provider Directory
- Click “Search” and enter your information in sections 1 and 2
- In section 3, on the right side of the new page, click on “Specialty” and choose “Pediatric Dentistry”

2. Call the dentist you picked and schedule an appointment. Let them know your insurance is HPSM Dental.
3. Take your child to the dentist and bring your child’s HPSM member ID card. During the 30-to-45-minute dental visit:
- The dentist may give your child a mouth exam that includes teeth, gums, jaws, bite and whether braces may be needed. The dentist may ask you about your child’s diet.
- X-rays may be taken to help look for problems. For children ages seven and under, x-rays are only done when there may be a problem.
- The dentist will talk to you about your child’s oral health. They may also show you how to brush and floss your child’s teeth. When you are done, they will schedule your child’s next appointment.
