Eligibility to Join CareAdvantage by Health Plan of San Mateo

To join CareAdvantage and remain a member, you must:

  • Live in San Mateo County
  • Have Medicare Parts A & B and
  • Have full-scope Medi-Cal through the Health Plan of San Mateo

Live in San Mateo County

If you move out of San Mateo County, you cannot stay in CareAdvantage. To find out what your other health care options are, call Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program at 1-800-434-0222.

Medicare rules do not allow you to live outside of San Mateo County for more than six (6) months in a row. If you are away longer than six (6) months, you will lose your CareAdvantage coverage. To keep your CareAdvantage plan up-to-date, call the CareAdvantage Unit.

Medicare and Medi-Cal

CareAdvantage is for people who have both Medicare parts A & B and Medi-Cal through the Health Plan of San Mateo. If you lose your Medi-Cal for some reason, you must get it back within four (4) months in order to remain a CareAdvantage member. If you are no longer eligible for Medicare parts A &  B, your CareAdvantage coverage will end.

Benefits and co-pays may change on January 1 of each year.
