Mary Giammona has been the Medical Director at the Health Plan of San Mateo since July, 2006.
She oversees clinical decision-making at HPSM and leads the health plan’s quality programs.
Dr. Giammona has led the development of the plan’s nurse advice line, the Pay for Performance
program for primary care physicians, and quality initiatives that have led to improved HEDIS
scores at HPSM. Prior to joining the health plan, Dr. Giammona was the senior medical director
for medical review at Lumetra, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization in California.
She also worked as the senior medical consultant for the Northern California Operations Branch
of Medi-Cal Field Services for the State of California.
Dr. Giammona is board certified in pediatrics and is board eligible in preventive medicine.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish literature from the University of California,
San Diego and her medical degree (M.D.) from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)
where she completed her pediatrics training. She received a Masters in Public Health degree
from the University of California, Berkeley where she also completed her preventive medicine
training.
